The ‘Cloud in a Rack’ model is based on an OpenStack open source cloud platform running on the Intel® Xeon® processor E5 family. Software-defined storage (SDS) technology allows IT administrators to provision and monitor storage across disparate vendor systems and commodity hardware.
One organization that is using it is Taiwan-based Taichung Veterans General Hospital (VGH), which is committed to delivering comprehensive integrated medical services using advanced technologies and the latest medical research.
It runs up to 1,200 different types of application to allow its IT personnel to oversee the testing and development of new systems in the hospital, and it needed to simplify management of the servers used to run these applications. It also wanted to automate data storage and backup processes to support the specific needs of virtual machines, and it needed to centralize its IT operations to reduce costs.
This new ‘Cloud in a Rack’ model has enabled the hospital to:
- Improve IT efficiency and productivity;
- Enhance organizational agility;
- Improve system performance; and
- Contribute to its green computing vision.
